Think of twins who are not physically similar but have thoughtful, opposing personalities. These two people are shadows of each other and are reminiscent of the duality of good versus evil. These types of counterpart characters are known as doppelgangers. A doppelganger is an alter ego of one's charisma. In William Golding's Lord of the Flies and John Knowles' A Separate Peace, the characters Ralph/Jack and Gene/Finny represent doppelgangers, explaining how they complement each other and maintain supremacy. A significant pair of characters who grow apart are Ralph and Jack. Their dual nature causes differences between them for various reasons. Physically, Jack is described as “tall, thin and bony: and his hair was red under his black cap. His face was creased and freckled, and ugly without stupidity. "(Golding) With an immoral self-image, Jack is considered unattractive. Meanwhile, Ralph is attractive and has an energetic physique. "He is handsome and well-built, he could become a boxer but never a devil, because he is cheerful and respectable, sensitive, caring." (Golding) Both identities can now be seen distinctly as opposites that repel each other. In contrast, Gene and Finny also parallel each other's egos and motivations." His combined good looks, subtle sense of balance, and tremendous energy create the sense of an academic." (Slethaug 259-270) Finny, who is a multi-sport athlete, has an almighty body and is seen encouraging himself /the others to be creative. On the other hand, Gene is the intelligent and resentful one; his jealousy causes him to return to evil. "The reader sees Gene as the typical treacherous and malevolent persecutor of the dual tradition." ) In comparison, Gene and Jack are... in the middle of the card... and the enmity increases and this turns evil. "Gene has discovered that his private evil, which led him to hurt Phineas, is the same evil, only amplified, that leads to war." (Ellis 313-317) Gene pushes Finny down from the tree so he can take on Finny's role in society. Overall, the conflict of supremacy remains a borderless conflict in which brotherly friends turn to hatred and the power to rule turns normal kids into savages. Ultimately, these doubles are influential characters who manipulate other people and places. Doppelgangers can be found simply by observing different personalities and their path to dominance. Their impact on society can be seen as right versus wrong. Now, through research and supporting evidence, it is possible to find doppelgangers in many literary pieces and allow readers to examine the common principles of thoughtful characters..
