Gail Dines posed the question to her readers on Pornland; How porn has taken control of our sexuality, “what are the consequences of porn on culture, sexuality, gender, identity and relationship” (xi). Competition from the pornography industry and consumer desensitization of porn have pushed the porn industry to create more hardcore porn to satisfy consumers and increase profits. At the beginning of the book, Dines describes the history of pornography and the increasing number of competition that porn has for consumers. It then describes the impact porn has on our culture, the effects on men and women, and our relationships. Pornography has evolved tremendously from being shunned in the past to its growing popularity in media and culture today. Numerous popular media outlets such as the television show Sex and the City and Howard Stern's television and radio shows popularize pornography and porn stars. Therefore, the popularization of pornography has become normalized in today's hypersexual media. Gail Dines concluded how porn has become normalized in today's culture, "The more sanitized the industry has become, the more it has seeped into pop culture and our collective consciousness," (26) Dines believed in the creation of Girls Gone Wild, an advertisement for Jenna Jameson and Vivid Entertainment have had a major impact on our cultural shift towards accepting pornography. After reading Pornland; As porn has taken over our sexuality, I have come to realize that hypersexuality in the media is certainly linked to pornography. Hypersexuality is present in every aspect of our lives such as advertising, television, music videos and films. As individuals are overly exposed to hypersexuality, they have become desensitized... middle of paper... they have become desensitized and have started to master themselves with harder porn like gonzo that previously disgusted them. Additionally, some individuals become desensitized to gonzo porn and start watching bondage and child porn, which is illegal in the United States of America. Gail interviewed a man named Jim who was sent to prison for raping women. He stated that at a young age he began stealing his father's Playboy, but after many years he began watching violent gonzo porn. Jim claimed that he could only get aroused by seeing women in pain like in porn. Gail Dines states, "Clearly, not all men use rape pornography, but what porn does is create what some feminists call a 'rape culture' by normalizing, legitimizing, and condemning violence against women." (96) Therefore, after individuals become desensitized to rape, pornography becomes normal for them and ultimately for our culture.
