Critical Analysis: “The Virgin,” by Sappho Bearing a child is the greatest responsibility that will happen in life. Providing time and protection for your child is an important part. But the most important thing is that they don't feel alone and forgotten. When they are parents, this is their job: to welcome them and never forget them. In the fragment titled “The Virgin,” Sappho uses vivid imagery to show how an apple tree has a relationship like mother and child. Like the tree would be the mother and the child would be the apple. Like a mother and child, it is the tree's responsibility to hold onto the apple and make sure it is taken care of, no matter what. Sappho uses imagery right away when she uses the words “Like a sweet apple that ripens.” in line 1. It is said that since the apple is ripening, it grows like a baby does.
