Topic > Gaining Knowledge from Experience - 797

Every day, throughout their lives, people learn more about themselves and the world around them. Everyone's goal is to gain as much knowledge as possible because it generally leads to satisfaction in one's life. The experience allows you to better understand yourself and the world around you. Faust and Michel Montaigne highlight the importance of learning from experiences and what happens without this learning. Thanks to their work, experiential learning is known to be very effective and is therefore incorporated into many teaching techniques. Gaining knowledge from experiences helps unlock parts of the world. In his book “Faust,” Faust focuses on how experiences, or lack of experiences, shape the world around him. Faust studies and becomes proficient in everything he can, but he is still not satisfied. He says he has mastered "philosophy... and law and medicine... even theology, from A to Z... no wiser now than when I began" (Goethe 15). Even though Faust got as much information as possible from the texts, he was actually quite ignorant about the real world. He didn't live and enjoy life because he didn't live through experiences. Instead he isolated himself from the world. He failed to apply his knowledge and in return failed to gain new knowledge from these circumstances. For this reason he was never completely satisfied. This demonstrates the importance of finding a balance between learning from books and learning from experiences. The lessons and information gained through experiences are the most effective and powerful. Teachings through experiences cannot be replaced or imitated and therefore significantly serve human development and overall happiness. Experiences also help you learn more about yourself. Certain situations cannot... middle of the paper... more complete, which is the common goal of liberal art schools. The most valuable lessons in life often come unexpectedly and in situations that cannot be undone. Gaining knowledge about the world and yourself comes from living life through successes and failures. These events cannot be duplicated, which is why experience is so influential regarding a person's development. Intelligence can be acquired from books, study and school, but if a person relies solely on this, he will feel a void in his life. Successful people are well-rounded, which is why many universities and schools focus on teaching lessons through real experiences, rather than books and lectures. Life is living and people should realize that. The world has many lessons to teach individuals about themselves and their surroundings, and experiences are the basis of everything.
