Jack, Roger, Maurice and the choir boys made up the savages. On the other hand, Jack devoted much of his attention to the nature side; he spent most of his time on the island hunting and getting used to their new lifestyle. Personally, I didn't understand why his group hadn't split in two simply so they could observe the signal fire and also satisfy their need to hunt. They could have killed two birds with one stone and stuck with Ralph's group. Instead, he used Ralph's ideas to suit his own interests and went against his theory. He interpreted their conflict of being stranded on an island with no adults as survival of the fittest, but obviously in tribes and not individually. Jack knew it was important to be saved but he didn't want to live on fruit the whole time he was there when he knew there was meat they could eat
