Lahaul ValleyLahaul Valley has remained overlooked, despite its exotic beauty, high mountain ranges, glacial lakes, and rugged terrain. This neglect can be attributed to the inaccessibility of the terrain and hostile climatic conditions. In this context it is worth mentioning that the traditional name of kullu is Kulanthapitha, which means the end of the habitable world. This is why the Lahaul and Spiti valley located beyond Kullu remained cut off from the outside world and this reputation of the region still persists. It is bounded on the north by Ladakh, on the east by Spiti, on the south by Kullu and Bara Bhangal. of Kangra, and to the west by Chamba. Andrew Wilson a European traveler called it "a valley of glaciers" and "an abode of snow". Some of the famous glaciers are Bara Shingri, Samundri, Gangstang, Sonapani and Perad. Figuratively speaking, the Lahaul valley includes the basin of the Chandra and Bhaga rivers. These rivers meet at Tandi and become Chandrabhaga or Chenab. A small part of the area also lies in the catchment area of the Lingti River, which is the local name for the Indus. Both Chandra and Bhage come from Baralacha la o pass, which is 8 Km. long and is at an altitude of 16,047 feet. Baralacha means a pass with junctions at the top, which is very appropriate, as the roads from Zanskar, Ladakh, Lahaul and Spiti meet at the top. In the Lahaul and Spiti district a complete sequence of geological formations dating back to the Pre- Cambrian to Cretaceous period are found, with brief interruptions in the Upper Carboniferous and Jurassic. Older rocks from these periods are also found in the region. Keylong is the district capital of Lahaul and Spiti, and is about 115 km away. from Manali. Alcoholic drinks should be avoided as much as possible. Some pain relievers, antihistamines and water purification pills should be carried with you as headaches and altitude sickness are common. Moreover, the purity of the water is not certain.
