The processes of imperial and modern colonization were and still are an important aspect that constitutes today's societies. The importance of modernity, the processes of imperialism and modern colonialism, how the process of colonization changed in the 18th and 19th centuries and finally how the importance of a historical actor like Abina challenged notions of colonial rule. All of these have roles that have changed ideas and brought new concepts that have changed the processes of colonization. To begin with, modernity is a post-medieval or post-traditional historical era. During this time period there was a movement toward industrialism, capitalism, individualism, nationalism, mass society, urbanization, totalitarianism, rationalism, and away from agrarianism. Agrarianism sees agricultural society as superior to the working class. Furthermore, the Age of Enlightenment appeared around the 18th century bringing new ideas. During the era of modernity the nation state, capitalism and mercantilism were on the rise. Socialist countries were also growing in this period. Furthermore, due to changing views from agrarianism, urbanization was increasing due to increased industrialization. The division of labor has also caused the creation of different segments in society and there has been an increase in the movement of capital, people, goods and even information through the media. Furthermore, technology and science began to grow rapidly. Science and technology were necessary because of the industrial age. These provided better equipment to factories to increase speed and production. Furthermore, the social sciences, especially anthropology, were growing in the 19th century. Modern psychology, evolutionary thinking in the social sciences and... the focus of the article... point of view, the era was extremely gendered. African and British men have formed an alliance making it difficult for women like Abina to speak out. These hierarchies separated genders, races, and cultures. Abina, however, responded to the courts and went against her hierarchy because the English dismantled slavery in that period. Abina thought she had a chance of gaining freedom. The story also illustrates that Abina is left out of conversations and negotiations. This demonstrates the oppression of women, the poor and youth resulting from colonialism. In conclusion, the differentiated views in the post traditional and post medieval eras show that modernity has changed views from agrarianism to urbanization. Just as urbanization and industrialization showed how colonization processes were changing and influencing societies.
