Topic > Privacy and Personal Space - 673

In society, there are specific standards that we adhere to throughout our culture. These are the basis of what we experience. These are based on a general consensus on what is expected and accepted as normal actions in society. Some examples of social norms include, but are not limited to, chewing with your mouth closed, saying please and thank you, driving on the correct side of the road, etc. The social norm proposed in this experiment was privacy and personal space. Have you ever been in a supermarket and thought someone was following you? Or did you go to a shopping mall and think you saw the same person in every store you went to? The norm broken in this experiment was privacy and personal space. Privacy is so important to us. We also have an amendment that protects us from an invasion of privacy. However, this is not exactly the same thing. The goal was to follow someone into a store and do what they did. Essentially to imitate their actions. When you sit there and think about different types of social norms, it's hard to think of one because we do them so often that now it's just a mechanical movement; we don't even have to think about it. There are norms out there that are broken very often, like when someone chews with their mouth open or uses their fingers to eat instead of a spoon or fork. I wanted to experience something different, something you don't always see every day. We've all watched CSI or Law and Order and seen that creepy guy follow the girl home. We saw it on TV but I wanted to see if the reaction on TV is the same as what would happen in real life. Most children learn respect for privacy from their parents. For example, when I went to a friend's house as a child... in the middle of a paper... and was followed, there was a sense of mistrust. The social norm investigated was privacy and personal space. This was done by following someone into a store and invading their space. This may have caused people to feel paranoid and suspicious as they looked back and tried to carefully investigate the situation. However, the situation worsened when people became ferocious and started shouting inappropriate words. Eventually the circumstances were corrected by telling people about the experiment. This experiment demonstrated what standards society sets for certain reasons. We are taught that when someone follows us or invades our personal space it is not okay and that we need to be careful. This is the same reaction I was given. Social norms allow society to regulate its behaviors and allow us to function properly.
