Assessing student performance through a variety of assessment approaches is a part of education. The evaluation system manifests its skills and knowledge through a process of transferring students' efforts and results into grades. Assessing student skills began in the 19th century, when teachers explained student learning to parents through oral communication. With the population growing in the 1800s, instructors use the official developmental assessment to evaluate students' completion of requirements. In the 1900s, the use of percentage as a grade for student work emerged as an accurate way to evaluate students. (Guskey and Pollio, n.d.). Most undergraduate universities, public or private, in the Philippines follow the grading system scale of 1.00 which is the highest grade corresponding to superior and 5.00 which is the lowest possible grade, meaning fail. Assessment involves the procedure of showing the student's strengths and weaknesses in a subject. Furthermore, a multitude of studies and debates highlight that changing the approach to assessment can pave the way for changing students' attitudes. (Cherry and Ellis, 2005). One change in the rating system is the alteration of the fifty-based rating system to a zero-based rating system. The zero-base implementation has emerged as instructors see the method as the best way to discipline students who do not exert the desired effort in studying. (Guskey, 2004). According to an online magazine published by Catalyst-Chicago, the practice of zero-based grading system can push students' grades to the lowest level, which may leave students with no choice to recover their low scores (Caneva, 2013) . In the Philippines, De La Salle Lipa is one of the schools practicing the zero-based grading system for BS i...... middle of paper...... from instructors to students. When comparing results, students accept their grades because there is evidence of reliable calculation and any complaints about the grades are justified. Assessment methods that students are comfortable with or supportive of can push them to acquire new knowledge and gain understanding and values. A student should not worry about grades or fear any assessment approach. Students must be satisfied with the grade they receive even if it is not the highest in the group. It could be devastating for a student to receive a failing grade, especially if that individual is confident of receiving a high grade. Most people think that grades are what students are, but that is not the case. Students should come to school with the desire combined with the enthusiasm to learn and not for the sake of grades or attendance in order to pass easily (Marquez, 2013).
