Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed the opera Cosi fan tutte in which is a classical musical masterpiece that depicts the story, strength, struggle and trials about love between individuals . A beautiful performance of this opera took place at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City on May 3, 2014. The concept of Cosi fan tutte was that a man, Don Alfonso, is trying to persuade and demonstrate to two young officers Ferrando and William that their women are unfaithful. Don Alfonso claims that “a woman's constancy is like the phoenix in which everyone talks about it but no one has seen it” (“Synopsis”). Throughout the progression of the opera the sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella are taken by surprise and deceived by Alfonso, Ferrando, Guglielmo and their maid Despina in an attempt to make the young women fall in love with other men (who are actually Ferrando and Guglielmo in disguise) to prove that they are truly unfaithful. Performance media included an orchestra conducted by conductor James Levine. The librettist who wrote the libretto or text of this opera was Lorenzo Da Ponte. This classical orchestra contained wind, brass, percussion and string instruments. The instrumentation consisted of 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani and strings including first violins, second violins, violas, cellos and double basses. Before the opera's first act, Levine conducted an overture that helped transition into the beginning of the first act. Don Alfonso, Ferrando and Guglielmo opened the act otherwise known as a trio. In both acts of the production, the performers spoke in recitative, or speaking to the music, to convey their emotions and vision to the other performer... in the center of the paper... like the music. James Levine, the conductor, as well as the entire orchestra really captured the essence of what each scene in both acts was trying to convey, as well as the emotion. The orchestra played fantastic and the artists sang and acted beautifully. I thought the set, sets and costumes were very elaborate and decorative. I really enjoyed the story the play told and the drama it involved. What really fascinated me was that Cosi fan tutte was also a kind of comedy. There were parts of the performance that made me laugh. I liked the fact that it wasn't such a serious work. The opera was light, funny, somewhat comical, dramatic and full of romance. The concert environment was intriguing. I really admired the Metropolitan Opera House. The design, the architecture, the overall look of the opera house. It was truly exquisite.
