The tragic story behind the famous Prometheus Bound has provided themes and inspiration to the art world. Prometheus was a Titan god who was punished for his transgression in giving the sacred fire of Olympus to rotten humanity. He was punished by Zeus, who tied him to a rock. While the eagles, symbol of Zeus, crowded him every day feeding on his liver which then regrows for the following day. Prometheus was immortal, and brought about punishment, eternal agony and tragedy for him. (Morris, 1991, p. 203) In the current generation, Prometheus is considered "humanity's champion" (Hansen, 2005, p. 48) for his kindness in sharing the sacred fire with people paving the way for the beginning of civilization and survival. This same concept of Prometheus Bound brings together thousands of arts to represent and tell the story of this event. These constantly remind people of the greatest irony in providing kindness in exchange for eternal torment, a sophisticated tapestry woven for lesson and learning. Two masterpieces of Prometheus Bound artwork will be the subject of analysis and comparison of this article.
