Un Sac De Billes is an autobiography written by Joseph Joffo, a French writer. The story is based on the life of Joseph Joffo and his family in the early 1990s. The Germans invaded Paris in 1941 and the Jews were the hardest hit. The Germans made it mandatory for Jews to wear an étoile jaune (yellow star) to distinguish themselves from others. The Joffo family was in trouble as they too were Jewish. From then on, whenever 10-year-old Joseph and his 12-year-old brother Maurice went to school with the star on their uniform, their classmates teased them; their teachers also treated them prejudicially. Joseph's father, Mr. Joffo, convinced his boys to flee Paris to a safe area, Zone Libre where Henry and Albert, their older brothers, resided. Joseph and Maurice faced many challenges at that vulnerable age; they fled from city to city to survive. After the departure of the Germans, the brothers returned to Paris. The Joffos were reunited except for their father who lost his life in the hands of the Germans. Texts can be analyzed both intrinsically and extrinsically, i.e. various techniques used for analysis. In contrast to intrinsic analysis, extrinsic stance places emphasis on what is outside the text and how the language used can be related to problems happening in our societies. Extrinsic analysis has a broader surface area because it is made up of several theories including Marxist literary criticism, post-colonial theory, and feminist literary criticism, to name a few. The analysis of Un Sac De Billes extrinsically brings to mind the post-colonial theory that is its side effects. of colonialism. It involves various aspects such as race, mimicry, ambivalence, hybridity... middle of paper... ridiculous and they in turn saw the Jews as lowly. Joseph Joffo used his family to provide a vivid example of how Jews were mistreated when the Germans dominated France. A Sac De Billes is based on the true life story of Joseph Joffo, making it an extraordinary piece. It informs us about the events that occurred in the early 1990s and how racial discrimination and the loss of their homeland altered the lives of thousands of Jewish families. Joseph and his brother Maurice found the means to survive and escape the Germans during that time. As they say, 'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger' and undeniably the Joffo brothers became tough and indifferent to hardship. Works Cited Joffo, J. (1973). A lot of banknotes.
