Imagine living in Mid-City; There are several reasons why Mid-city is the heart of New Orleans and its people. People think Mid-City is normal but it's not, it's the attraction of New Orleans. Mid-City is the area where all cultures (black, white, Indian, Chinese and others) meet (Mid-City Snapshot 1). The population after Hurricane Katrina dropped dramatically. Most of the houses are modern houses with ancient architecture. Violence reached its peak after Katrina. Now, the city is in the process of recovering and still progressing in the movement (Mid-City Snapshot 1). Mid-City is located in the center of New Orleans, halfway between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain. Mid-City is where the French and Spanish of New Orleans come together. Half of the city divides the uptown from the center. Unlike any other neighborhood in Mid-City it is unique. The city center consists of the 3rd Ward, the 4th Ward, some parts of the 7th Ward, and some parts of Uptown. The slave and history museums are one of the main attractions. Spanish and French restaurants would be the main attraction (Mid-City 1). After the devastation of Katrina, the downtown area changed forever. Schools, churches, homes, families and neighborhoods changed. There are maybe 2 schools in the area which is dramatically poor for the community compared to the local population. Before Katrina in 2000, Mid-City's population was nearly 20,000 people living in 5,830 households (Mid-City Organization 1). Mid-City's population still has the highest percentage of Hispanics, at 10 in every neighborhood (Mid-City Snapshot 1). The area is slowly returning to the shape it had before Katrina; however the population is still. Mid-City was the first suburban-style neighborhood......middle of paper......s in the face and keep shooting it. Including both of these crimes, the Mid-City gang accounted for 18 percent of homicides in 2013, or about 193 homicides. (Vargas 1) Mid-City strives for the best as it continues to bring back and build markets in the community, such as Circle Food Store, Whole Foods, Family Dollar and more. The owners of all these stores say “this will bring New Orleans back before Katrina.” Whole Foods is a new addition to the community, which is one of the benefits of the community instead of going so far to get food and kitchen appliances (Sayre 1). Circle Food Store has been around for so long and the fact that it has reopened has given the community hope for a new environment. (Sayre 1) Mid-City will always be the heart of New Orleans, despite the murders, fights and new developments. Works Cited Vargas 1 sayre 1
