Young children can be easily influenced by their surroundings. They learn from the roles of their teachers and their fellow students and peers. This is clearly demonstrated in Ender's Game, a science fiction novel written by Orson Scott Card. It shows how Ender Wiggin, a very young boy, is put in a leadership position and what he learns through this experience. Through a computer game, Ender discovers that he is a very intelligent assassin. Through his experience as a commander, Ender learns that being stern will help him be a better leader and win games. Finally, his experience with Shen and Bernard teaches Ender that having humor will easily allow him to make friends. Overall, Ender's experience at Battle School teaches him many things about himself, leadership, and friendship. Through the computer game he plays at Battle School, Ender discovers that he is a cunning assassin. In one part of this game, Ender is faced with a giant standing behind a table with two liquids, one of which supposedly takes him to "fairyland" after being drunk, and the other is poison. It's a puzzle that Ender must solve simply by guessing the right liquid. After many failed attempts, however, Ender begins to feel frustrated. Instead of guessing one of the liquids, he knocks over both glasses, then “jumps onto the giant's face, climbs up to his lips and nose, and begins digging into the giant's eyes” (64) . Ender shows his ability to solve problems when he decides to disobey the rules of the game. His murderous side is also unleashed when he decides to gouge out the giant's eye and kill him. It shows the side of him that mirrors his brother Peter. The rigorous training sessions at battle school and Bernard's treatment probably made Ender stand out....... middle of paper ....... Ender manages to get the other Launchies to feel comfortable around him humiliating the boy who is everyone's bully. He is able to find common ground with the Launchies in his army. He successfully makes friends and "his isolation was [is] over" (53). When trying to find friends, Ender finds that showing his sense of humor is the best route. Overall, Ender's leadership affairs teach him many things about himself, leadership, and friendship. He learns that showing his sense of humor will help him build friendships with his fellow Launchies. He also learns that being a tough commander will produce positive results for his army. Eventually, Ender discovers through a computer game that he is an intelligent killer despite all his raw emotions. Although Battle School is a tough test for Ender, he can learn some valuable lessons that will likely help him later in life..
