Society has imposed certain stereotypes on girls and women about what is considered beautiful, that is, girls focus more on their appearance than their inner self. Every girl deserves to feel beautiful because they all are, but how can girls think they are beautiful if there is always that constant reminder of what it means to be considered beautiful? We often see various programs on TV in which little girls are judged for the way they walk, turn around, how they wear makeup and hair and what they wear, and obviously for their beauty. Society has set such high standards for what is considered beautiful and girls are victims of those standards. Girls now feel that they are not beautiful enough because they do not meet standards such as height, weight, body shape, skin color and many other characteristics. There are so many repercussions to participating in beauty pageants because girls are judged on their appearance which makes them more aware of what society thinks of them. Beauty pageants cause long-term cognitive and emotional problems. Little girls are now more concerned with developing their outward appearance than their inner selves. For many girls what matters most is their external appearance because this is what society judges (Agadoni). Girls feel that they have to meet all the standards set by society to be considered beautiful, so they strive to get that amazing body, their skin has to be perfectly tanned, they even starve themselves to achieve the weight and body they have to participate in the competition. Girls spend so much time trying to achieve a superficial appearance instead of focusing on what is truly important like their inner beauty and... middle of paper... so much pressure that they and their moms put so that they can compete and win titles in competitions. Moms sometimes don't take into account that girls are too young and expose them to objects that make them look much older, making them seem sexualized at such a young age. All girls are beautiful in their own way and should not be judged by the way they walk, turn, or how their hair or makeup is done. Girls should focus more on themselves because they are already beautiful on the outside. Works Cited Agadoni, Laura. “How do children's beauty pageants affect a child's development?” Daily life.
