It seemed that segregation had been an obsolete idea in the United States for more than fifty years. However for Charleston, Mississippi it's a different story. Charleston High School originally became an integrated high school in 1970. Since then, Charleston High School seniors have always had separate proms: one white prom and one black prom. In the documentary we see students worried about prom, their parents' reactions and their future. In 1997, actor Morgan Freeman, a Charleston resident, offered to fund the prom if the school had an integrated one. His offer was ignored. Ten years later, in 2008, Freeman offered generously again. This is where the story begins. In many parts of America, people would find it impossible to believe that this film depicts real events that occurred in 2008. Yet in other parts, where the undercurrent of racism is palpable even if not manifested as overtly, as at Charleston High in Mississippi, minorities will be able to relate to their own experiences of feeling different and unwelcome in many subtle ways every single day. It was shocking to find out that this still happened in this day and age, I rarely witnessed any kind of cruelty or racism, so I found out that this was a normal thing in Charleston, Mississippi. This was scary to say the least. Teenagers are dealing with problems that a teenager shouldn't even bother dealing with. White students have been put in a situation where they either defy their parents and do what is right, or they follow what they said and fall into the line of ignorance. The film really showed who was willing to fight for what is right and who was too scared to break questionable traditions. After watching the documentary I... middle of paper... will not let go of their traditions. no matter how corrupt they are. I was happy that at the end of the movie most of the kids went to the integrated prom and those who did had fun. It's a real shame, though, that the white prom was a success and was repeated the following year. I don't think parents are aware of the message they are sending to their children and how hateful it really is. Some parents have said that this is a harmless tradition that they wish to continue, but this tradition is very far from harmless. In the documentary we see the students worried about prom, their parents' reactions and their future, but in the end most of them had a very fun prom and the white kids who decided to going to the prom they had a great time wishing everyone could join them. Thanks to Morgan Freeman, he changed life at Charleston High School forever.
