The idea that pornography offers feminists of different opinions this middle ground where they can come together and see how to articulate the different desires of feminism and what they want to turn it into is one of the main reasons Catherine Lumby argues that feminists need pornography (par 60). As Lumby writes in “Why Feminists Need Porn,” chapter five of her book Bad Girls, “the idea that a line of cause and effect can be drawn between fantasy and social practice is disturbing and unpleasant to some feminists” ( par 60). Feminists, questioning this line, may find the need to reevaluate their political position and how they connect issues of feminism to other ideas and movements. The realization that feminists should constantly question their positions on social and political issues has not become clear to everyone, but Lumby believes that debates among feminists on the issue of censorship and pornography (issues that go hand in hand according to the chapter ) bring the realization into the open (par 60). Lumby's beliefs and many of his arguments are reiterated in two other articles on the relationship between feminism and porn. In A Feminist Defense of Pornography by Wendy McElroy readers can find the different positions on the topic detailed and described, although with a preference for one that prevails over the others. McElroy's prejudices and position agree with Lumby's belief that porn and feminism need each other in some sense, but McElroy takes the idea a little further by stating that it's not just feminists , but all women benefit from porn (McElroy, par 27). While McElroy and Lumby have clear opinions on the benefits or otherwise of porn for women and feminists Natalie Purcell takes a neutral position in her article Feminism and Por......middle of paper......I lie. In any case, Lumby, McElroy, and Purcell effectively captured the reader's attention and made their opinions clear in context to their entire audience. Works Cited Lumby, Catherine.
