Pope Francis is trying to unify Europe with religion once again. To Pope Francis, government and political life in Europe seem to "give the impression of being a little old and haggard, feeling less and less like protagonists in a world that often looks at it with detachment, distrust and even, at times, suspicion" ( Armstrong). Pope Francis has the plan to solve all these problems with the unification of Europe just like Constantine did with Rome before his death. “Pope Francis' solution is to embrace religion, especially Roman Catholicism. Religion has seen a decline in Europe in recent decades and the Pope hopes to reverse that trend…Pope Francis says Europeans must not forget the two-thousand-year history between Christianity and Europe” (Armstrong). The Pope knows the history of Europe very well and putting it at the service of the world now and in the first centuries Christianity and Roman Catholicism is what has unified Europe over the centuries
