Topic > Advantages and Disadvantages of Digital Democracy

Living in the digital age has changed the way many Americans view politics. The Internet has made it possible to connect to local and national politics without leaving the comfort of our homes. Surveys and questionnaires are answered via email, and ballots are filled out online in a process known as digital democracy. Technology has raised the question of whether political representatives are still necessary in our government. There are many advantages and disadvantages to digital democracy. Digital democracy would be advantageous because it is simpler, less expensive and caters to younger citizens; but it is disadvantageous because it is potentially dangerous, may not reach all citizens and creates skepticism among many voters. There are many positive aspects of digital democracy. The main advantage of digital democracy is that it creates a simpler process regarding access to documents and information for public bodies and citizens. For example, digital democracy enabled the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles to enable digital signature, legal certification, and electronic delivery of government documents in 2004 using electronic postmark technology. (quote) It is widely known that many Americans complain heavily about waiting in order to take care of government business, particularly when it comes to the Department of Motor Vehicles. Digital democracy would eliminate this problem by allowing driver registrations and tickets to be managed online, from the comfort of the citizen's home. Another advantage of digital democracy is that it is slightly less expensive than physical politics. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Wal-Mart and NIC have developed an online hunting service at...... middle of paper ......and heard. Digital democracy also reaches more people. The option of voting online or allowing someone to express their opinion on an online forum is beneficial to citizens who live out of town and would not be willing to vote by mail. Furthermore, the technological aspect also appeals to younger citizens who may not have previously been involved in politics. Furthermore, I think it is interesting for all citizens because it saves a huge amount of time and is extremely more convenient than having to participate in public forums or having to queue to vote. Finally, I think it is inevitable to integrate politics into the digital age. Much of our lives are already embedded in technology. It is logical that our politics also joins this incorporation. I realize that digital democracy has obvious disadvantages, but in this case the good outweighs the bad.
