The New RiverThe New River is an ancient river. Despite its name, the New River is one of the oldest rivers on the continent and the second oldest river in the world (after the Nile in Africa). The New River is probably about 360 million years old. It begins as two streams in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and runs 160 miles through Carroll, Pulaski, Grayson Montgomery, and Giles counties in Virginia, as well as Bluestone Lake in West Virginia before integrating into the New River at four miles from Virginia. line (“Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries”). The New River flows into the great Mississippi River. It is also one of the few rivers in the world that flows north rather than south like the rest of the rivers. The New River is a great place for kids, teens, adults and even seniors to enjoy a great day of water and land activities during the summer and spring seasons. Students enjoy killing the summer heat in the New River around the McCoy Falls section of Montgomery and Giles counties, about twenty minutes from Virginia Tech. River Junction offers the opportunity to rent or bring your own kayaks, canoes and inner tubes to discover the area by water. You can always take a camping trip with your family or a group of friends and enjoy a great day of fishing. New River Junction can be crucial to the experience of spending a summer in Blacksburg (Kelly Cline). As the river flows through Virginia into West Virginia, it picks up several warm-water tributaries, making it an unusually warm-water river. The New River is wide, shallow, rocky and clear, which allows the sun to enhance the warm water conditions even more. The river can reach temperatures as high as 85-90 degrees......middle of paper......t amounts of rain have brought the river to above normal high levels, causing the closure of the New River Junction on multiple times for people's safety (Cline, Kelly). Unfortunately the river campsite is only open 7 days a week from May 1st to September 30th. The New River is the new hot spot in Blacksburg for those who love the beach. The closest beach to Blacksburg is probably about 4 hours away. If you're one of those people who wishes they had an outdoor pool or a nearby beach, The New River Junction gives you the chance to enjoy a beautiful sunny day on the water. As mentioned above, the waters are warm enough that you won't freeze to death and are a great place where you can enjoy a nice day with your friends or family. If you're staying in Blacksburg during the summer, the best way to spend a sunny weekend would be to go camping, grilling, and tubing.
