Topic: Definition of TermsName:Course:Instructor Name:Date:1. Birth rate, death rate and fertility rate The birth rate is the total number of births that occur per 1,000 people in a year. It is often called the crude birth rate and gives an idea of the ratio of total births to total population in a given region over a one-year period. It is calculated through ways like; obtain statistics on live births from a universal birth registration system, statistics on deaths and population size from censuses, marriages and also estimates using specialized estimation techniques. The death rate, on the other hand, is the number of deaths per a subgroup of 1,000 inhabitants, also called the death rate or death rate or crude death rate; when it provides a general overview of deaths in the entire population without restricting the field to the causes themselves or to the age groups or life stages of the victims. Crude death and birth rates are used to calculate the size of populations. Finally, the fertility rate is the total number of children a woman can give birth to in her lifetime. This however is based on the assumption that the woman survives to the end of her reproductive life and gives birth to children in conjunction with the age-specific fertility rate schedule. Growth rate, infant mortality rateThe growth rate is the rate at which the population changes over a period of time, increasing or decreasing. It is normally the net difference between crude birth rates, crude death rates, and the immigration rate. In essence it gives the ratio with which the number of people in a population increases or decreases in a certain period of time compared to the total number p...... half of the paper ...... ability to produce without exceeding the growth potential or the level of growth of resources. There is usually no set approach to calculate it as different resources will have unique abilities to produce or abilities will replace the value of their depleted value. For example, in the context of wildlife, sustainable yield would be calculated at the level where wild animals would be able to reproduce with each other such that their consumption by humans would not render them extinct. Sustainability on the other hand lies in taking measures to protect the natural environment. This notion places greater emphasis on preserving the environment's ability to support human life indefinitely. Supports moderate exploitation of natural resources so as not to exhaust them and use them sparingly for the benefit of future generations.
