Before the theory of evolution was a widespread theory in the world of science, Greek and Roman philosophers had their own theories about how life got to its current state and where she would go from there. One theory of the time was that all organisms were reflections of a “perfect” form and were getting closer and closer to it, although this was the least accepted theory although closest to the truth proven hundreds of years later, while another was that all things were simply places on Earth in their current form, common to modern creationism. Even after this, Darwin was not the first to try to explain evolution, he merely provided convincing evidence and published his ideas. Furthermore, the publication of Darwin's Theory of Evolution was one of the most important biological advances of all time; it has led to answers about the history of the earth and provides information about humanity's ancient unwritten past. Charles Darwin was a naturalist from the early years of his life; as a result, he always spent his time collecting plant specimens and taking nature walks (Sparknotes). In his hometown of Shrewsbury, England, he lived with his knowledgeable father and in the shadow of his grandfather, Erasmus Darwin, who had his own ideas about evolution (Browne 40). He was born at the height of his father's career, so his family was wealthy. Darwin had little or no interest in school, but still had the intelligence to be invited onto HMS Beagle (Sparknotes). The HMS Beagle was a British ship on a scientific expedition around the world to study the native flora and fauna of whatever area they visited (Browne 40). The Beagle departed Devonport, England in December 1831 and began sailing west... center of map... Real History). When these theories were first published, they encountered stiff opposition from ordinary people. Evolution came into conflict with people's religious beliefs, and Darwin's ideas were rejected by all but other scientists (Browne 40). The Bible states that the earth is only a few thousand years old, but for evolution to be possible, the earth would have to be several million years old if not more. The Bible also suggests that all species were put on earth at the same time and in the same form they are in today, including humans, rather than the common ancestry and speciation supported by evolution (Silverstein 10). But whether you choose creationism or Darwinism, it is difficult to deny the facts and evidence adduced by the theory of evolution, and every day another step is taken towards discovering the true origin of species..
