In the story of “Oedipus the King” Sophocles portrays themes, symbolism and imagery. With these in mind, they influenced the character to do some things we wouldn't normally do in today's society. By showing us the way he acts he leads us to know the difference between right and wrong. In the past, we never knew what was being shown as truthful unless someone told you. So not realizing the importance of the role played by Oedipus has a significant impact on the audience's reactions. The first theme is fate versus free will. Some examples include when Queen Jocasta had a son later in life, he was the one who killed her father. Once this happened, he had to marry his mother and have children with her. At first Oedipus did not know that he would marry his mother because he had been raised by other parents. Jocasta did not know that Oedipus was the one who killed her sweetheart, and for this reason when she found out she decided to kill herself to be part of her first husband over the bed again. Oedipus had to start looking for the truth and see the reason for these things...
