In the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry, the recipients are the only people who have feelings and memories. Elders are the people who choose what is best for their members in the community and sometimes turn to the recipient for help in making the right decisions. The people of the community do not see colors nor do they have the freedom to make a decision for them. There is no love, feelings and grandparents. Jonas is assigned as the community's next recipient; He was formed by the donor, who transfers to him the memories of the pains and pleasures of life, who also shows him the truth and reality hidden from the community. Jonas' community does not represent the ideal of society because there are no choices or distinctions between men and women. These people from the community are given a role in the community, where they do so until they are old and are sent to the Home of the Elderly and await their release. There is one good thing about the Jonas community. Community means that people in the community are provided with the basic necessities for their survival. “He watched as the mother tidied up the remnants of the morning meal and placed the tray at the front door for the collection staff” (36-37). This statement had given us the idea that the whole community is fed. The elder of the community gives each family unit the same things so that everyone has equal conditions, and evicts the social classes present in the community. In Jonas' community there are no distinctions between men and women since they are assigned numbers at birth, and until they are assigned to their parents they are given a name. Jonas was taught to ignore the differences between people. Even though it was not one of the rules set by the elders and considered by the people in com... middle of paper... all aspects of life were controlled and all things were equal. In the community there is no freedom of choice other than that of choosing where to provide community help; all decisions are made by the elders. It has been discussed how Jonas' community does not represent a perfect or ideal society. One of the main reasons is that if a citizen of the community does not do what the elders tell him to do; they will be released, which means they will kill them. Some of the other things mentioned are the types of things that they have no freedom of choice for. Jonas's society was supposed to believe that it was the ideal of a society that gives the basic things for one's survival, but in the end it reveals that people in the community are not told the truth about the things the elders do, or they don't know for examples the colors, feelings and all the things that were there before identity.
