My Internship is a non-profit organization that provides a full range of programs to address and end intimate partner violence. During the week I split my time between two locations; the main building in downtown Boston and to an 18-month transitional living program for young women (ages 15-21) who are pregnant or parenting. The transitional living program, which I will call ABC, is a house that can accommodate up to 8 mothers and 13 children at one time. Most of the young women currently staying at ABC have been living there for at least 6-8 months, if not longer. Only 2 out of 8 women have moved there in the last 6 months. While I recognize that each young woman has come to ABC because of her own unique circumstances, with her own narrative, I also simultaneously recognize that there are common threads, from both the past and present, that begin to weave together the lives of these young women women. Therefore, rather than talking about a single individual in the home, for the purposes of this article I will consider the young women as a collective group. Because the house they live in is a shelter run by a larger organization, I think it is important to consider the house as part of these young women's context, just as it is important to look at the actual neighborhood where the house is located. For the sake of anonymity, I will refer to the neighborhood as Gross Point. The residence, which is the largest home on the block, is located in the heart of a small, affluent suburban enclave bordered by low-income urban environments, just outside the city of Boston.
