Everyone knows that no one has all the answers to life's trials and tribulations, when the people we meet tend to look to older members of society for information. More specifically in close families grandparents are considered wiser than younger members simply because they have lived longer but grandparents do not always know what is best. In “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O'Connor the grandmother uses her beliefs and her faith, which resembles that of a Catholic, as a guide to go through life as confidently as possible while still being respected as a woman . She is trying her best to live a “moral code,” but shows no signs of morality when she lies, is manipulative, and judges others. However, this so-called moral code ends up being the root of his and his family's defeat. Early in the story, O'Connor makes it known that Grandma doesn't approve of the trip the family is taking to Florida mainly because she wants to visit Tennessee, but uses Florida's current events as a way to convince Bailey to change her mind. He states, "Well, this guy who calls himself The Misfit is free from the Federal Pen and headed to Florida. I wouldn't take my kids anywhere with a criminal like that on the loose."(35) He takes advantage of the fact that there is a criminal on the loose and headed to Florida to manipulate his son and bring the family to Tennessee, this is similar to how in the Catholic religion those who practice it are manipulated by the church to believe that they should believe certain things and act in a certain way. Grandma is using the same methods to get what she wants and change Bailey's mind. She also attempts to manipulate the children after Wesley suggests... half the card. ..... family in the woods and they kill them. She seems to know what she will do to them because she is familiar with his crimes but not once does she ask him not to kill them focusing mostly on the misfit and herself, she compliments him hoping he won't kill her but in the end she gets killed too. After the multiple problems Grandma has caused, it is clear that the assumption that older people know best seems to be challenged now. She was manipulative, irresponsible and simply useless; all of this could have been avoided if she had simply accepted the original trip. As much as he stressed to the family that they should avoid coming into contact with the criminal, he ends up being the reason they met and killed him. While wisdom comes with age, it is not always wise to listen to everyone.
