Topic > Pregnancy: is it for all ages? - 1555

Think about a life and how wonderful it is to bring life into the world, but now think about life with complications, all because women delay pregnancies for personal reasons, such as career and money. According to the Journal of Clinical Nursing by Loke & Poon (2010), both professionals in the medical field, state that “[t]he increasing percentage of first births by older women is a public health problem” and “…there are controversial believes that pregnancy at an older age makes women more prone to pregnancy complications and adverse outcomes” (p. 1142). This statement lends credibility to the fact that there are many risks that develop during pregnancy in older women. Today in the media there are stories about pregnancies among the younger generation and controversies about children raising children, but how harmful is the case when older women bring their first or maybe even the last child in the pre-menopausal stage and sometimes - but very rarely - in the stages of menopause. According to Bedwell (2006), a research midwife, "...[mothers], however healthy at the time of birth, are likely to subsequently face health problems by virtue of their age", and this raises awareness of the fact that health risks should be examined and considered before conception in the older generation (p. 514). Health concerns will not only affect mothers at an advanced age, but above all they will affect the unborn child with problems related to physical and psychological risks, which will be discussed in the rest of the essay. The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology provides evidence to its readers that there are physical health risks associated with late-life pregnancies such as... middle of paper... would they really have done it? It is known that women are rising from the minority to become respected, but this is costing themselves and their unborn child harm if they postpone pregnancy because they wait until she has lived her life first. It's no secret now that late-life pregnancy is a harmful concern, both physically and psychologically. If these concerns were presented to older women who choose to become pregnant, they might reconsider before taking that step. Women and children are diagnosed every day with problems and defects due to failed pregnancies and for a cause that could have been prevented. This is one way that mothers, young and old, can raise awareness among women to avoid an increase in defects and worries in possible pregnancies at an older age..
