Advertising has become one of the most powerful and effective tools companies use to launch and brand products. Advertising is a form of communication used to persuade an audience to take an action on products, ideas or services. Every day we are surrounded by advertisements, which push us to make different purchases without our mind realizing how much they really influence us. Advertising is available in many different mediums and communicated in many different forums. Among all forms of advertising, visual advertising has proven to be one of the most successful ones. Graphic designers have the ability to insert subtle references and allusions into your mind using different fonts, colors and visual points to capture the audience's attention. Companies are willing to spend millions on advertising to promote their products and services. In April 2007, Hidden Valley Food Products Company launched a new advertising campaign aimed at parents purchasing the product to get their children to eat more vegetables. “Hidden Valley, which leads the entire salad dressing industry, estimates the integrated campaign will be worth a price tag of $40 million” (“New Hidden Valley Ad”). A rhetorical analysis of the influence of Hidden Valley's "Eat Your Vegetables" campaign will demonstrate the effective use of visual concepts to reach target audiences and therefore increase market share. Hidden Valley Food Products Company is headquartered in Oakland, California and is a world leader in the manufacturing of salad dressings. The multinational company enlisted the assistance of one of the largest and most powerful advertising companies, DDB, to abandon traditional advertising campaigns and create… for salad dressings but as a multipurpose product for the food and restaurant industry. In 2011, four years after the campaign launched, it would have been unusual to find raw vegetables served without a side of ranch dressing in most restaurants, family homes, or caterers.
