Not always witnessed by someone close to the incident, but is usually seen on one's computer or television. Violence seems to be one of the most common problems in many societies today. Acts of murder are feared and avoided by anyone in their right mind. With this in mind, how can people watch murders on the television screen, but do anything in their power to avoid death? No one wants to die, but finds enjoyment in the death of others. Don Delillo's videotape reveals how humans have a tendency to watch terror and death due to the desire to stifle their fear of death and for personal entertainment. Don Delillo has a specific message in his story about a young girl who witnesses a murder through a camera and a man who watches over and over as a form of entertainment. The story of Don Delillo Videotape begins with a young girl in a car on the highway, on what seems to be an ordinary day. However, while innocently filming the stranger in the vehicle behind her, the stranger is suddenly shot in the head by "The High Way Killer". The girl continued to record as the man's life was unexpectedly taken away. Furthermore, the narrator of the story is a man, also in the story, who watches this exact footage and is haunted by the fact that that man's life was ended so abruptly. How is it that people are able to watch other human beings die or be harmed? Watching horrific videos on the Internet or on the news of real events says something about society. Don Delillo writes: "You keep looking not because you know something will happen, of course... halfway down the paper... and it had millions of results." It just shows what our society is like. In the Videotape story man watches man get shot over and over again. He has a strange curiosity about death, just like many people in this world, because we are all afraid of death. We all want to know how we will die. Seeing other people die gives us an idea of what death is and what it might be like for ourselves. We watch it to see how a person behaves when they are slowly dying or when they are about to die. Just like the man was waiting and waiting for the driver's death. Death can happen so unexpectedly and people are afraid of it. By observing or reading about murder incidents, society becomes less sensitive to them. This exposure through the media demonstrates a decreased sensitivity and increased curiosity towards death and violence. Don Delillo's Videocassette reveals this aspect of society.
