For many years there has been debate as to whether or not personality plays a role in the workplace, in areas such as "teamwork, job suitability, leadership, service, sales and, in general , performance and satisfaction” (Furnham, 2008). Personality is an important topic for HR and training professionals to consider during the hiring and employee development process. Employee personalities could have a significant impact on performance of an organization.Therefore, I believe that it is necessary to use personality tests in the workplace. Personality tests help to identify the characteristics of an individual, provide employees and managers with information about the individual to use to discuss individual differences. , promote conscious knowledge of one's own character, feelings and motivations and provide a starting point for group discussion (Passmore, 2008). Employers who use personality tests in the workplace for development purposes look for tests that are “less psychological and have more positive language, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)” (Lloyd, 2012). The MBTI is one of the most used personality tests in companies today. It was developed over 30 years ago by Katherine Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers. They generated their test based on Carl Jung's theory of personality types. Jung proposed that there were two psychological types of basic personality traits: introversion and extroversion, and four functions (thinking, feeling, perceiving, and intuition). He also believed that everyone has aspects of both introversion and extroversion; however, one of these attitudes is seen more consciously and the other more unconsciously. Myers and Myers-Briggs added two more functions to Jung's theory (judging and for... half of the paper... whether a candidate has a tendency towards violence or other harassing behavior" (Stabile, 2002) Finally, for some employers job, it is often best to be able to test for specific traits in a particular job that might predict success or that might make a candidate unsuitable for a particular job. For example, in service industries, employees deal directly with the public , so it is important to have an idea of the employee's potential service orientation, as the company is judged by the quality of the service provided. Another example is seen in a position that requires sales and constant communication with people to extroversion may be more useful to the organization's goals. Overall, the use of personality tests is significant in workplaces both for selecting new employees and developing existing ones.
