The Indian Independence Movement was a dark period in the history of India. During this dark period, from 1857 to 1947, India struggled to gain independence from the British (tonj.edu). The English were very stubborn; as they promised several times to get India's independence during the Independence Movement as well as during the First World War. However, they never really gave them the independence they deserved (tonj.edu). Fortunately, a man named Mahatma Gandhi helped India achieve its goal of gaining independence. Gandhi is known by the London Times as “the most influential figure India has produced for generations” (mlk-kpp01.standford.edu). The Indian Independence Movement, provoked by the British, raised an uprising on the Indian people during the Minor Rebellion of 1857, had an effect on the Indian people during the formation of the Indian National Congress, during the First World War, during the Second World War , and underlined the importance of India's unity during the movement. The Indian independence movement was triggered by the British. The British East India Company began in the 1600s by a group of merchants to promote trade with Asia. The English arrived in India in 1608, attracted by India's spices, silk, and cheap labor. The British developed a chain of factories across India. By the mid-18th century, the English raised large sums of money obtained through plunder and manipulation of the Indian people (Chandra 58). During this period of British rule, India had no say in politics and had very little influence in politics and decision making (historylearningsite.co.uk). The English did not want to become part of the Indian nation. The English did not even attempt to adopt the religion, social habits, language or customs of India. In fact, they have…half of paper…independence. The Indian Independence Movement emphasized the importance of India's unity during the movement. The unit helped India gain its independence. Their unity and nationalism also played an important role in helping India gain its independence. The unity also helped Gandhi make a positive impact on the Independence Movement. In conclusion, the Indian Independence Movement was a success. Although the British repeatedly presented false hopes for India, this did not stop India from trying. Gandhi did everything in his power to ensure that India would one day be free from British rule. Many other things favored his power, such as the Indian National Congress, unity and so on. Gandhi's will and courage to make India an independent country is one of the reasons why he is so revered today.
