The Roaring Twenties were known as the period immediately following the end of the First World War. The people of this time hoped for a new change to come and bring a period of happiness, instead of the gloomy period once before. The United States was beginning to transition from a time of war to a time of peace. They started with their economy. Americans spent their money on improving their surroundings such as roads, tourism, and real estate. New technologies began to increase, such as automobiles, refrigerators, telephones, radios, ovens, etc. This caused Americans to begin living with higher standards. They bought their homes and filled them with the latest technology. Food was also cheap due to the abundance produced on the farms. Radio and music were very popular. Radio covered everything Americans relied on, such as news, sports, music, and other forms of entertainment. America in the 1920s popularized many cities and made them the biggest attractions in the country. New York was at the top of the list with its huge skyscrapers and buildings. Chicago and New York have given birth to many industries that have created many job opportunities. These jobs consisted of a lot more office work. These jobs involved secretaries, where women preferred these positions. However, many women continued to hold some factory jobs even after the war. Women got the vote on the right in 1920 and also gained a lot of independence by starting to do jobs instead of just men being given credit for “bringing home the bacon.” They also developed a new style known as the “flapper” style. This consisted of skirts, dresses and short haircuts. The dresses were sparkly and had fringes. They were also cloche hats, especially during the day. When women weren't dressing like flappers, they wore pants most of the time. This was the first time women actually started wearing pants. In the 1920s men dressed very formally and semi-formally. Their wardrobe consisted of tuxedos and elegant dresses. They wore long ties, coats, vests and loafers.
