Painful Realities Poetry creates awareness of painful realities. This can be especially appreciated in war poetry where generally the poet's aim is to educate people about the horrible events that happen during the bleak years on the battlefields. Painful realities are expressed through metaphors, similes, specific tones of language, and moods. Furthermore, poets use rhythm, reflections and questions in their writing to express their feelings and what war is essentially about. To study how poetry creates awareness, four poems will be considered. These are War, Chick Martin, Dulce et Decorum Est, Wilfred Owen Grenade, Francis Scarfe Bombardment, DH Lawrence. In the first poem, it is evident that painful realities are created through the author's use of descriptive language and his ability to describe battlefield scenes and subsequent impacts. There is no regular structure to the poem, although there is a recurring line at the conclusion of each stanza; War is war, nothing more. This is the basis of the poem, which explains to readers that war is as it appears. It's like gruesome scenes of violence, death and pain. There are ????? After describing how the soldiers trudged through the mud, "bloodied and drunk with fatigue", he then describes the gas bombs. Owen then concludes his poem, questioning the government, questioning Jessie Pope, and questioning the world that has lied so mercilessly to the young men, forcing them to enlist. He questions the old adage, "dulce et decorum est pro patriamori", (it is sweet and right to die for one's country). The realities are so well portrayed in this poem by Owen through his choice of punctuation and use of reflection. Exclamation points are used, exemplifying the intensity of the soldiers' shouts and how they tried to warn each other of the green sea. Owen can do it
