Nineteen-year-old Jacob Waters is an intelligent, healthy, good-looking young man. So why can't he build healthy relationships? Why is physical pain incessantly inflicted? What stops him from living a healthy life? One word is the root of all Jacob's problems; porn. Since the age of thirteen Jacob has been addicted to online pornography. The physical and mental pain of his sexual frustration takes a toll on his life. When Jacob gained Internet access in his room, he was able to enter an adult content portal without supervision. Now he is paying the consequences, having to pay for treatment and make a slow recovery. Compulsive and sexually risky behaviors can occur due to excessive viewing of pornography and have a negative impact on the brain. Undeniably, an increase in the availability of technology has increased the use of pornography in children and young adults. Laptops, tablets and smartphones are all modern devices used to communicate and can also be used to access the Internet. Information can be obtained with the touch of a finger. “According to research by the London School of Economics, 52% of children aged between 11 and 16 have access to the Internet in their bedroom” (Behr 30). Therefore, 52% of children can enter the digital portal of pornography. What may begin as a simple experimentation could lead to a lifetime of pain and suffering. Behind closed doors, unsupervised children can view an endless amount of pornographic content. Pornography is an uncomfortable topic to talk about, so it's difficult for parents to intervene. Most parents are ignorant, or pretend to be, to avoid such discussions. When kids are given unlimited access to the digital world, how can they not be temporary… middle of paper… recreational sexual script (Wright 62). Viewing this material blurs the lines between what is acceptable behavior and what is not. Overall, the brain can be negatively affected and forced to participate in sexually risky behaviors due to watching too much pornography. Behind closed doors, children experiment with their technologies and are unknowingly exploited by the online porn industry. Content addiction can cause the brain to become addicted to the short sessions of pleasure it provides; just like alcohol and drug use. Multiple sexual partners and unprotected recreational sex are both heavily promoted in pornographic films. Because of this, bystanders are much more likely to take part in the actions they see, which can lead to infectious diseases and unintended pregnancies. In a world without pornography, Jacob Waters might be happy.
