Topic > Winston's Major Changes in the Novel 1984 By George Orwell

George Orwell is one of the most influential English writers of the 20th century. 1984 is a story about the future world imagined by George Orwell. This futuristic world is a dystopia where the government controls every aspect of a person's life. In the novel 1984, the main character is a thirty-four-year-old named Winston. Winston is a rebel at heart, but he knows it. As the story progresses, Winston goes through many changes in his life. Orwell's main character, Winston, became a rebellious and reckless man who no longer wrote diaries but began to live out his fantasies in real life. Winston's first major change is to go from being an oppressed and frightened man to a courageous and implacable rebel. His second major change was that he was no longer aware of his surroundings; he became reckless. Winston goes from being a very cautious man to a careless man. Winston's third change was that he no longer wrote his diary but began to live it in everyday life. Winston is a very complex man who lives in a society where he cannot think for himself. In a society where a citizen has the wrong expression on his face he could be killed. In a society where the most common things cause the average man severe punishment, this is enough to frighten any man. The main character Winston was really afraid of the authorities. For example, at the beginning of the story, when Winston begins to write in his diary, his thoughts were focused on whether it was a crime. In this passage Winston thought to himself: “The thing he was going to do was open the diary. This wasn't illegal (nothing was illegal, as there were no more laws), but if discovered he was reasonably certain to be punished by death, or at least twenty-five years...half of paper. .....or actions” (Orwell). Orwell states that Winston no longer writes but lets his actions speak for him. Orwell also says that his writings were the first step in Winston's rebellion. Although it was small, it led to other life-changing choices that ultimately cost him. In conclusion, as time passes in the story Winston changes. Winston became courageous, reckless and began to act instead of speaking. Most of these changes are due to Julia, Winston's counterpart. Julia triggered the change in Winston that he never expected, he knew how to control or manage. Winston's change occurred largely because it was what he wanted. The changes he has undergone have helped him but also hindered him. However, Winston's change has been positive for Oceania. The people of Oceania finally had someone who cared and wanted to fight for them, but Winston's careless actions captured him.
