Janie's mother, who goes through a tragic moment in her life, causing a nervous breakdown, lets her grandmother take care of her. Over the course of her life, Janie meets several men, all of whom end horribly. All the men Janie married had different perceptions of marriage. After her third husband, Janie finally returns to her home. It is in the belief that Janie is looking for someone she can truly love, and not someone her grandmother chooses for her. Although Janie ultimately lives a humble life, her quest is questionable. In the early years of Janie's life, there were two people she depended on. Her grandmother is Tata and her first husband is called Logan Killicks. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, "Janie, an attractive woman with long hair, born without the benefit of the clergy, is his heroine" (Forrest). Janie's grandmother felt that Janie needed someone to rely on before she died and Janie could no longer depend on her. At first Janie is very against the marriage. The nanny replied: “'Tain't Logan Killicks Ah wants you to have, darling, his protection. …He spared me…a few more days until I see you safe in life” (Hurston 18). The nanny will definitely remind Janie that she needs a man in her life for security, thus forcing her to approach life with that thought process. Dale 2Janie sees Logan Killicks' perception of marriage. At first, it seems that Logan is a very kind man, who always treats her well. “Janie felt happy at the thought that, for... middle of paper..., she had found her identity. It wasn't easy for Janie. It took her years to discover who she really was. In Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, everyone has different ideas about what marriage is. Janie eventually learned that marriage is what you make of it. Love can only be found when your beliefs coincide with another's idea. Even today, people discover the hard way that they are not compatible and that they have a different vision of marriage. We see it every day among couples who separate and among those whose marriage lasts for the rest of their lives. Life is a learning process and we must accept the bad along with the good. Instead of looking for a fulfilling life, Janie looked for someone to rely on. Although they were different forms of addiction, she jumped from person to person so she wouldn't have to face life alone.
