Violent video games and the effects on young people Today our world is surrounded by technology and new inventions that improve our lives. One of the most popular hobbies among children and teenagers is video games, but what many people don't know is that they're bad for you. Violent video games in particular have been shown to be inappropriate for the age groups that play them and have a negative effect on schooling, social behavior and increase aggression. Children who play violent video games are influenced to ignore the consequences of violence. Anne Harding of CNN states that “when you are exposed to violence day after day, it loses its emotional impact on you” (web). This tells us that our growing technological society is at greater risk from violent new generations. Furthermore, “Electronic Gaming Monthly” also thinks that “The implications are serious for an increasingly violent society and that these students will do more and more bad things” (Kusher, web). The author infers that as the gaming community grows, the danger of violence also increases. Clearly, we must heed the warnings that come from these reports to protect our society. Numerous studies and reports show that video games also stimulate bad behavior. An article in “New Scientist” shows that “unequivocal evidence from a wide variety of studies shows that, in the short term, exposing children to violence in films, TV, video games and music increases physical and verbal aggression ” (“Bad Influence”, web). This negative influence will have a huge change in the way children and adolescents behave towards individuals. The International Journal of Phycology states that “adolescents who play adult-rated games are more likely to engage in mediocre skills than students not addicted to games” (Boyce, web). The fact that the influence of video games has even reached elementary schools should be disturbing. Furthermore, convincing results from one study demonstrated that violent video games significantly reduce empathy and prosocial behavior” (Boyce, Web). Here the author tries to warn us that exposing our youth is a big risk to their social life. Basically, we need to keep kids away from video games so they aren't in any danger. All in all, violent video games have a very negative effect on children and adolescents, which many parents are unaware of. Games can cause serious mental and physical harm to the people who play them and can seriously affect their academic performance. As older, more mature individuals, we must take the necessary precautions to protect future generations.
