Whitaker1Tre WhitakerEH1301Essay no. 53, April 2014The StoreFor this essay writing assignment, and just for the simple fact that I go to this place almost every two weeks, I choose to write about something that I felt extremely comfortable with going to the barbershop. Over the course of my life I have been to many different barbershops, some in Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama, although they were all in different states, with different people and personalities, they all had the same thing in common, and that was that familiar, inviting feeling. which everyone emitted as you walked through the door. I've been going to the barbershop since I was a kid, so I know the surroundings and what it's like up close. While it may not look very interesting, the store is a really fun and informative environment. Some people go to local shops and don't even bother to get a haircut, they just go to hear the latest gossip and what's going on not only locally, but also globally. There are also women who work in many barber shops, although they don't cut hair like men would, they are more stylists for women who need to get their hair done, I'm pretty sure the beauty salon is just as interesting as it is it's the barber, because women also love to gossip. I look at it as a kind of art form, I mean there are thousands of different hairstyles that people go to barbers and ask for. Cutting hair seems so simple and easy at first glance, but as you sit and watch the barber's every move, how carefully he cuts the hair to make sure everything is even and mixes it all together, you realize that it takes quite a while skill to do. Barbers create a special social connectivity with... middle of paper... that struck me. I love the pleasant smell of the hairspray and cleaning liquid they use at the barber shop, when the barbers cut hair. I even dare to say that I love that smell, honestly, many people are familiar with the smell of the shop, like when someone gets a new haircut, you will hear people say "you just got a haircut, huh?" and that same question arises from the smell of the barbershop that is imprinted on that person's clothing for a short period of time. I think the barbershop is a very important place to our African-American culture, it's something that many of us have grown up with in our lives, it's a place where you can just go and be yourself, and have fun, while still being surrounded by a group of different personalities. It is a place where many go to improve themselves, both in appearance and in knowledge.
