The problem of evilSaint Augustine was one of the first to really address the problem of evil in the Christian sense. After separating himself from the Manichaeans due to his dissatisfaction with the way they viewed the problem, he found a viable solution to the problem of evil that could put the minds of Christians at ease. St. Augustine lived from 354 to 430. During the time he lived, his world was a melting pot of instability and suffering. The Roman Empire, a symbol of strength, was falling. He lost his mother, lover and son during his life. These circumstances certainly pushed Augustine to question evil. According to his Christian faith, God is very good and created all things. Evil was a problem because if God were good, it would be logical that He would not create evil or allow suffering. Yet evil is in the world. Saint Augustine spent a good part of his life addressing the question of the origin of evil, reason and the origin of his existence.
