A crucial moment within the Chipko movement occurred when deforestation affected a marital relationship, as the wife was directly confronted with her husband's employment contract consisting of destruction of trees. When the men came to cut down the trees, one of the foresters seemed to be perplexed as to why the women were trying to protect the trees from being cut down. The women responded by stating that “[they] came to teach [them] forestry.” The forester proclaimed: “Silly women, how can you prevent the felling of trees by those who know the value of the forest?
