Chinese culture has a very strict family hierarchy and Chinese culture tends to be based a lot on pride and a family member's problems can often cause the family to be judged based to that person (Yan, Accordino, Boutin, & Wilson, 2014). As a result, many Chinese parents pressure their children to achieve the highest marks and status in everything they do. This pressure can cause stress for children due to the importance of excellence in this culture and the importance of family honor. Chinese culture also tends to have more negative feelings towards mental illness (Yan, Accordino, Boutin, & Wilson, 2014). This can cause even more stress on the child, which can affect their development in the long term. The values present in this culture may prevent the child from receiving the help he or she may need to prevent the mental illness from worsening (Yan, Accordino, Boutin, & Wilson, 2014).
