Topic > Characteristics of Dark Romanticism - 1870

Literature is powerful. Every day people around the world are directly and indirectly influenced by books written over the centuries of human existence. Some people turn to literature for inspiration, others to understand a concept learned in school, and still others for pure pleasure and entertainment. Whatever the reason, literature impacts people and leaves an imprint on their lives; his presence is seen everywhere and his legacy is present throughout the ages. Over the years, several literary movements – such as Romanticism, Realism and Transcendentalism – have sprouted with the aim of leaving a lasting mark on literature. Romanticism, originally born in Europe, found its way to New America in the early nineteenth century and blossomed in In the tale, Poe, similarly to Hawthorne in The House of Seven Gables, sets the story in a dark house where there is no it is light or light. happiness seems to exist. Poe describes the house “as the melancholy House of Usher” which causes a “sense of unbearable sadness to pervade [the narrator's] spirit” (Poe 264). This is crucial because it shows that Poe incorporates the dark-romantic quality of a dark, supernatural atmosphere. The eerie exterior creates a sense of dread that builds suspicion and suspense throughout the story. Poe describes the house as having "tiny fungi scattered all over the exterior, hanging in a thin tangled web from the eaves...and a dilapidated condition of the individual stones...woodwork that has rotted for years" (Poe 265) . In this quote, Poe describes the state of decay of the house and seems to compare it to the person inside the house, Rodrick Usher. The windows look like her eyes and the mushrooms are her hair. This is important because Poe expresses the dark and romantic qualities of suffering in the human spirit. Just as the exterior of the house is falling apart, so is Rodrick's mental stability and sanity; Rodrick suffers at home and his mind is deteriorating and decaying. Keith Neilson writes how "The Fall of the House of Usher" is a dark romantic work because it contains "a haunted atmosphere, darkness and evil" (Neilson). Poe's writings and works are heavily layered with dark romantic ideas to visually display the supernatural and mystical scenes he presents to readers. Edgar Allan Poe writes about evil and suffering to expose readers to the flaws of humanity and the darkness that exists in the world. His powerful and dark descriptions not only leave an indelible mark on the emotions of readers, but also on the literary world
