Some of the reasons for the rising cost of healthcare are: Third party payments; imperfect market; technological growth, increase in the number of elderly population; current medical model of healthcare delivery; multipayer system and administrative costs; defensive medicine. One social issue that healthcare organizations must respond to is the high cost of healthcare. High healthcare costs are the reason for the growing burdens of many Americans. A survey conducted by the Henry Kaiser Family Foundation found that 58% of people did not seek the care they needed due to rising healthcare costs (Huff/Post50, 2012). The healthcare organization can help solve the problem by supporting its community through social support, education about preventive benefits, health promotion, health management, counseling and person-centered planning. The second social issue is the availability of healthcare. Disparities in access to health care remain a problem in America. The healthcare organization can help people in the community through education and behavioral health care. According to Wyland (2014), chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and substance use disorders are behavior-based and require recurrent rather than acute interventions to be successfully treated. Educational and community-based programs play an important role in preventing illness and injury, improving health, and improving quality of life. Everyone has personal responsibility for their own health through active participation, education, and lifestyle changes (Harkness & DeMarco, 2016). The third issue is health equity. The reason for gaps in quality of care is due to the inability of healthcare organizations to integrate improvement measures into the care process (Mayberry, Nicewander, Qin, & Ballard, 2006).
