The Tempest was Shakespeare's last play written shortly after England colonized Virginia in 1609. Throughout the play, there are many different references to imperialism and colonialism. colonialism within the characters. The Tempest analyzes the imperialistic relations between England and America but applies it to the personal human interaction between the central characters. The island offers newcomers a sense of infinite possibilities, such as claiming the land for themselves due to belief in the Great Chain of Being and the seventeenth century being an age of exploration. The idea of ruling a colony attracted many people to the idea that it was possible to have that kind of power over a large group of people. Master-servant relationships are central to many scenes in the play. Almost every scene consists of one person possessing power and authority while another person is subject to that power. For example, Caliban represents native cultures suppressed by European societies, of which Prospero is a symbol. This was also a time when a hierarchical world was attainable through the means of colonization, imperialism, and slavery. The Great Chain of Being was the idea that all people and other creatures were not created equally. For example, the father is the head of the family; below him, his wife; below her, their children. This idea can be attributed to the widely accepted mentality at the time where a master-servant relationship was common and some people were inferior to others due to social status, wealth and power. These ideas have led some people to think that it is morally right to use other people who are inferior to them to achieve success and prosperity. The Tempest can also be seen as a criticism of imperialism represented by the different situations found in the middle of the card. ....perhaps then one might ask whether Prospero's shifting of actions can be justified. But this may not be entirely true, if we look at history before the Storm. We know that Caliban was born of a witch and an incubus defined as an evil or unholy male creature who has sex with women in their sleep, so he was not conceived from love but from lust which can be interpreted as sinful. This automatically makes him inferior to Prospero who was born with noble status; he was born to be ruler of Milan. Partly due to Caliban's upbringing and knowing that he attempted to rape Miranda, he can be characterized as someone driven by pleasure. Prospero, on the other hand, is guided by intellect. He tries to do what he thinks is right to maintain his position of power. He must think more and plan his decisions to manipulate situations and people.
