They bought 6,642 acres on which to build the great city. They decided to name the city after their friend Sam Houston. “He was a general who led the army that won Texas' freedom from Mexico.” (Passionate Nation pg. 274) Sam Houston also became the first president of Texas. The brothers built a Capitol building; it was two stories high and was completely made of wood. The Texas Congress has moved from Columbia to the new Capitol building. Within four months of Houston's founding, more than 1,500 people lived there. Once the city began to grow, Houston became very famous for its famous port. The port sent and received goods from all over the world. Unfortunately, in 1900, it was hit by a hurricane. “Houston helped in World War II. They helped in shipbuilding, steel production and oil production.” (visithoustontexas.com) Houston's history is very rich, as is its culture. Culture Culture is a big deal in Houston. “With more than 2.2 million residents, the city attracts visitors and transplants with a wonderful mix of world-class arts, booming business, professional sports and award-winning cuisine.” (visithoustontexas.com) Houstonians love theater. When Houston was founded, the city's residents built a theater in a week; it took a year before they built a church. The average restaurant meal costs $29.10 in Houston; the national average is $33.67. ForbesTravelor.com named Houston one of America's best restaurant cities. There are more than 8,000 restaurants in Houston. Some of the most famous celebrities were born or raised in Houston, including Demi Lovato, Kelly Rowland, Beyoncé, and Selena Gomez. Conclusion Houston is a popular city with lots to do and see; Houston is a great place for everyone. It also has many cultural attractions. Houston is a great place to visit especially when the weather is warm. Sam Houston and the Allen brothers created a great historic city with many cultural attractions. The weather is warm, but that doesn't stop Houstonians from enjoying their city's many attractions.
