In this country, a college education is still vital. For many first-generation students, it means the difference between continued poverty or the means to a much better life. Yet once these students reach the campus of typical historically black colleges and universities, they are likely to be faced with what may seem like an impenetrable wall of resistance in the form of classist practices commonly found at top universities. As Fulwood (2012) suggests, to counteract classism it is necessary to make changes to the systems that perpetuate it. Some of these systems mentioned above are the media, “white privilege,” the economic system, the government, and educational institutions themselves. We must consider those policies, initiatives and programs that need to be put in place to help education become more inclusive and welcoming for all students and that are effective in combating the social injustice of classism.
