Research on the use of Engineering Village and Compendex database among engineering students at UTMABSTARCTKeywords:INTRODUCTIONOverviewUniversiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is a technology-based university which produces the largest number of engineering graduates in Malaysia. The mission of UTM is to provide quality education to the masses, in line with the vision of the country. As a public university, student admission is determined by the UTM senate and the government. There are a variety of students from different academic and social backgrounds who meet the criteria for pursuing engineering education at UTM. UTM is focused on creating a vibrant academic engineering and technology culture and a fertile intellectual ecosystem that inspires creativity and innovation in engineering fields. UTM is renowned for being at the forefront of engineering/technology knowledge and expertise where it has contributed to the nation's technical development and professional workforce since 1994. As a graduate-focused university, UTM has the largest number of postgraduate enrollments in its specialized field, which is one of the key elements in contributing to the development of an innovation-driven economy. Having produced more than 200,000 technical graduates and skilled professionals over the years. UTM has earned its place as Malaysia's leading engineering and technology university by inspiring creativity and innovation in engineering/technology education (About UTM, 2010). The History of UTMUTM was founded in 1904 under the name Treacher Technical School. The first buildings were located in Weld Road, now known as Jalan Raja Chulan, Kuala Lumpur. The main purpose of its creation is… middle of paper… technical terms and fields are carefully selected and applied to its resources to help remove noise from each search string. The resources are updated weekly and cover over 175 disciplines in the engineering field. With the addition of the Easy Search function in 2005, there are currently four interfaces for searching information and there are Easy Search, Quick Search, Expert Search and Thesaurus. All Compendex interfaces facilitate the range of search complexity, from a simple phrase or keyword search to methods involving controlled vocabulary, classification codes, special indexing and limits. Compendex also allows the user to perform a combination of searches across a number of related databases such as Inspec and Compendex. Once a user has an answer to the question, the user can choose the method of viewing the information in three ways: Abstract, Concise View, and Detailed Record.
