This is effective through her use of descriptive words such as "hard" and "big, round and glittery like cartoon jungle boys". (Smith) These words add images in the reader's head and when you read “big and round and shiny like cartoon jungle boys” (Smith) you get the image of two cartoon characters puff fighting, that puff of cartoon smoke where different parts of the body parts come out of the smoke during the fight and then immediately re-enter the smoke. These words show that the main character thinks that all this is some kind of cartoon and the whole quote shows the reader that there are some sick people in this world, now and in the past, who will do horrible things because the skin color of a person is different. If he left those words out and simply said I walked into a dark alley, because it's hard to see me, and I hit a black man with a pipe, the meaning wouldn't be the same. There is a demonic effect that comes across in the parents when you read the quote and its use of imagery makes the main character seem more evil. The way he uses dialogue in his images also affects the reader's sense of listening. The quote part: “Hey, nigga, Abe Lincoln been dead a long time.” (Smith), it really adds more hate into the interaction. If this sentence were obvious, the entire quote would not be as strong as the dialogue gives the reader
