Topic > Exploring Genetic Engineering: A Modern Twist

The medical field has also reaped the benefits of genetic engineering. With recent discoveries and understanding of so many debilitating diseases and injuries, researchers are working to develop new ways to keep humans healthier for longer periods of time. Advances in technology, genetic engineering procedures, and new drugs have allowed researchers to discover methods that can be used to help those suffering from many diseases and injuries. According to an article titled Genetic Engineering Breakthrough published in Medical News, “Scientists have made great strides in muscle regeneration. They are attempting to help bedridden patients and elite athletes by designing a “switch” that will enable mutations or light signals in muscle stem cells.” This discovery could also be used as a tool for studying difficult-to-treat muscle tumors. Dr. Charles Keller, MD, assistant professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center and a senior researcher involved in the work, said, “We hope that the genetically engineered mouse models we have developed will help scientists and doctors better understand how to make muscle stem cells regenerate muscles
