Topic > Rise of the Planet of the Apes Movie Analysis

The movie I choose to watch is “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”. In class we learned that primates have different categories. Categories include; movement, reproduction, intelligence and behavior patterns. In the film, the main ape, Caesar, as well as the other primates in the film display examples of these categories. However, like most modern films, some behaviors and characteristics are not true and do not relate to the material we studied in class. This film was made in 2011 with James Franco as the main character, Dr. Will Rodman. The film is set in San Francisco, where Will works in a laboratory hoping to discover a cure for Alzheimer's disease. The main thought in Will's head every day is trying to save his father. Charles, Will's father, suffers greatly from this disease and even the hired nurses have given up on his recovery. Charles and his team invented ALZ-112, a shot they hoped would be the scientific breakthrough they were hoping for. The monkey on which he tested ALZ-112 showed rapid results of increasing the level of intelligence. Along with the increased intelligence level, the monkey's eye color had changed from a dark brown to a bright green, giving it the nickname "Bright Eyes". As Will showed his boss videos of Bright Eyes performing tasks with remarkable results, his boss was very impressed. During the presentation, Will's colleague Franklin tried to remove Bright Eyes from his cage. Bright Eyes was not happy with them taking her away from her cage, she ran around the lab destroying everything in her path. The chief ordered Franklin to kill the monkey, thinking that its behavior was a side effect of ALZ-112. They didn't know that Bright Eyes was just in the middle of the paper, you see, like monkeys do." At the end of the film we see Caesar on horseback. This is a part of the film that I found quite comical. We never see horses in the movie, so for Caesar to know how to get on a horse and ride it is too far-fetched. Even in the film Cesare managed to speak in the last scene. This is not true, primates like Caesar are capable of learning sign language and other ways to communicate but are unable to speak. “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” was a great film to watch, I would recommend this film to other students taking this course. The film portrayed primates as we learned about them in class, even if some of their behaviors and characteristics were not always true to what we learned. The movie did a good job of showing the categories of primates, even if some of their behaviors were exaggerated.
